Standards-Based Education
Translating standards into instructional practice
As states increasingly set adult education standards, educators often need help connecting those standards to their classroom teaching. Using a train-the-trainer model, MPR is working with state staff, program administrators, and instructors from six states to build expertise in standards-based instruction. Participants develop practical classroom strategies that can be disseminated throughout the state.
Improving adults’ math skills
Adult education programs tend to emphasize language and literacy skills, but many adults also lack math skills. Educators often lack the necessary preparation for teaching math to adults, and there is little consensus in the field about the best content and methods for teaching math to adults. The Strengthening America’s Competitiveness Through Adult Math Instruction project is addressing this gap by developing principles of adult math instruction and field-testing a standards-based professional development program to improve adult math instruction and learning.
