Life at 35,000 Feet engages students in investigating the causes of illness among passengers and crew on a fictional international flight. This multimedia case study is based on national standards in science, bioscience, educational technology, and workforce readiness. To determine the causes of illness aboard Mercury Airlines Flight 351, students learn about the immune and respiratory systems and preconditions of disease; analyze possible causes for symptoms; and evaluate the environmental systems of the plane, among other tasks. In this process, students have an opportunity to develop skills in scientific inquiry, problem solving, reasoning, and communications. Sample rubrics for evaluating students' work are included in the Teacher's Guide. |
